I will lift up my eyes to the mountains...
From where does my help come?
My comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth.
Some of these photographs belong in a "sea of clouds" category.
The first time I saw this, I was backpacking with my father in the Hocking Hills in Ohio.
When we got up in the morning, there was a layer of clouds or fog below us, and the sky was clear and bright in the sunrise.
The effect was of a shining sea of clouds at our feet. I was a teenager then, so I guess it was about 40 years ago.
In 1996, I drove into Chattanooga Tennessee at night, under a full moon,
and saw the same phenomenon as I drove over the hilltop at the edge of the city.
On this occasion, the effect was mysterious, both dark and glowing at the same time.
The stars and the moon shone bright in the crisp black sky, as did the city lights below.
But the city lights were swallowed up in a translucent sea of light.
This sea of light was fed by rivers, and dotted with black island hills standing up through the sea of light.
During my photography expedition this autumn I was better able to plan where I would be before sunrise and sunset. That resulted in some good shots in this category. There are also some "sea of clouds" shots in the Pano/Wide Landscape section.
